For my final project I am only about 33 seconds in but no need to worry. After talking in class today I think I have officially decided what I am going to do for my project. My topic is all set which is dorm life and living with roommates. I was just going to do interviews like I did for my midterm project but I think I’m going to take a different approach. I think I am going to do a sort of intervention approach where there are two roommates who are having problems and it needs to be sorted out because it’s getting out of hand. I’m not going to make it a straightforward video. I’m going to chop it up and still use quotes, facts, etc. I am going to have music playing in the background to keep the flow of the video going. My video is going to be serious but funny. I think it’s a good idea to do an intervention type of approach because so many people have roommate problems and it is good to know that there are things you can do to make living with a stranger work. I think this will be a better video than my midterm video because it’s going to be more attention grabbing and it won’t just be dry. Also I’m going to have a clear beginning and ending because I did not have those in my midterm video. I want my video to be interesting and have an effect on viewers so they know that things like this really do go on in college. I want my video to stick out and make it my own and I think by making an intervention interview it’s not going to be like the rest or like the midterm video.

Final Project Proposal
For the Final Video Project, it has to be a problem and solution video. For my video I want to do the adjustment to Dorm Life. When people live on campus they either live with their friends or strangers. No matter what situation, there is always going to be tension between roommates. I want to focus on how you adjust from living at home to living with a roommate, if roommates have had problems with each other, and how they solve the problems in the dorm. There have been many instances I’ve heard about roommates not getting along and sometimes they even move out so that is why I want to see if there is solutions to make living with roommates easier. I’m not only going to focus on students at Southern, but I will ask my friends from other universities because everyone experiences these problems.
Key Points I’m Going to Focus On:
-Personal space
-Personalities
-Study Habits (quiet, listen to music, etc.)
-Having people over the dorm
-Sleep Patterns (wake up early, sleep late, television on, etc.)
Project Layout:
-Title
-Clear Beginning
-Quotes from students
-Research
-Interviews on problems
-Quotes on problems
-Recap on problems
-Solution Page
-Interviews
-Research
-Quotes
-Recap on solutions
-Clear ending
-Credits
I think this is a good topic to discuss and do a problem and solution for it. Some people don’t know how to properly solve a problem and in this situation it could lead into a fight or even a roommate moving out. Yes, living with people is stressful but there are solutions people can use to make their experiences better. You don’t have to be the best of friends with your roommates, but you have to make the year last and make it less stressful on your part and on your roommates part.

Campus Safari #3
This week I went to the Health Center. I wanted to know what are some precautions that you can take so you don't get sick. First, you have to drink lots of fluids. Drinks like orange juice are really good for you. Next, you need rest. You have to sleep in order to make your body feel healthy. You need at least 8 hours of sleep a night. Lastly, you have to be eating healthy. Eating junk food and unhealthy foods are not going to make you feel better. Sticking with fruits, vegetables, and healthy food are your best options. If you don't feel better after taking these steps, then you should go to the Health Center to get checked!

Readings for 11/17
For the readings for Thursday, it is about building a social life in college. If you were introverted in high school, which is quiet and liked to be by yourself, you have to be more outgoing in college. When you move into college you have to talk to a lot of people in your classes and dorm buildings if you live on campus. You should keep your door open in your dorm room so anyone can come and say hi. Instead of studying alone, have a study group. It’s a great way to meet new people. You have to get involved on campus. There are so many clubs out there to join and it’s a great way to be involved and make new friends with similar interests. Even if you aren’t into sports, go with a group of friends to show your school spirit. There are many job opportunities on campus. You won’t only get experience but you will be earning some money! If you are interested in Sororities and Fraternities, it is a great way to meet a group of people who you’ll be apart of brotherhood/sisterhood. But, with having a social life, you have to have a balance between that and school. It’s better to do your schoolwork in the library. There are fewer temptations in a library and it’s a great way to escape for a little while and really focus on your studies. If you are struggling with your classes, get help! There are so many tutoring centers that are there to help you. Don’t wait until the last minute. Go when you know you need extra help. There are so many things to get involved in with college. You have to just go out there and get out of your element. College is about taking chances and there are so many chances out there.

Readings for 11/15
For Louie’s readings I did the survey before I started the readings. My type is ESFJ. That means I am a provider. The first reading I read was about the left side. That means that a person is dominant on the left side of their brain. They are thought of as the logical, thinking side. People who are left sided like classical music, are good at math, like to read, can’t be hypnotized, love dogs, think better when they are sitting down, like to be organized, and much more. The next article was about people who are right brain dominant. They are considered the dreamers, the artists, and the musicians of the world. They like rock music, good at art, love cats, can be hypnotized, like to act out stories, unpredictable and spontaneous, and more. We learned about right and left brained last year and we took a quiz and I was right brained even though I do have some left-brain tendencies. The other articles I read were for Dominique’s group. I like that they’re doing their presentation on relationships in college. It’s important because we are in college now and these are real life situations. People are now free and can do whatever they want. You’re parents aren’t here to tell you who you can and cannot date. You are in charge of your own life. Being in a relationship can be a good thing but it can also be a bad thing. You have to find a balance between relationships and school. You can’t make your whole life around your significant other. Not only do you need to have good relationships with your boyfriend/girlfriend, but you need to have good relationships with your roommates. They are apart of your college experience and you need to maintain a healthy relationship with them to get through college.

Campus Safari #14
On October 27th I went to the Pep Rally. My best friend was performing with her dance group who is known as Symphonic Pulse Dance Company (SPDC). I was so excited to attend because I've never seen them perform before! They were all dressed in black and their makeup was done kind of scary because it was Halloween Themed. They did one dance but with three different songs combined and the songs were Monster, Move If You Wanna, and I'm Ready For Ya. They were absolutely amazing. They rehearsed in such a short amount of time and it was like they've worked on this piece for months. I give them so much credit for what they do and I'm glad that this is a dance company at our school.

Readings for 11/10
The readings that are due for next class are for my group with Taylor and Steph. We decided to do our project on parenting skills. When we started talking about it, we expanded our topic. Why not add statistics for social networking into this? This is an on-going topic for teens and even parents. Some parents know what their kids are doing while others don't. Back to parenting skills, I was really intrigued on what I read. You see parents always using the “1,2,3” method when their child is acting out, and in actuality, it isn’t that effective. I always thought that a good method to use. I thought it was very interesting to learn the different parenting styles. Now onto kids with social networking and reality television. We thought this was also effective for this project because parents don’t always know what their kids are doing on the Internet. 73% of teens have at least 1 social networking site, 50% of teens use their real age, 75% of teens have a cell phone, 55% of teens have given out personal info to someone they don’t know, including photos and physical descriptions, 60% of adults think parents should have full control over everything a child does online, 88% of parents know that their teens typically use the internet to communicate with people they don’t know in the offline world, 34% of parents check their child’s social network sites, 55% of 12 to 18 year olds watch reality tv, and the list goes on. Parents don’t always know what their children to behind their backs and some parents do. We want to get the point across by asking should parents watch what their teens are doing on the Internet and what age do you think it’s okay for teens to start using a social networking site?

Readings for 11/8
My first discussion is going to be about Ashlee, Spencer, Emily, and Kelsey’s articles. I loved how one of their articles was from an actual college website. It really stuck out to me. I like how they did their topic on eating habits in college. It is an ongoing factor for the students who live on campus. It’s hard to say no to all the unhealthy foods but there are so many steps to take in order to maintain a good diet. There are more factors then just eating healthy. You have to get sleep in order to keep the pounds off. Sleeping manages stress so you aren’t tempted to eat when you are stressed. You should be getting at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep. One thing that stuck out to me the most was that you shouldn’t nap too much. I always thought napping was a good for you. Another big factor of keeping the pounds off is limiting your drinking. Alcohol has so many calories in it so alternation from alcoholic beverage to water or seltzer is suggested. YOU NEED TO EAT BREAKFAST! So many people skip breakfast and that is not good for you at all. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I really thought these articles were very informing and I can’t wait to learn more in class tomorrow. In Dion, Jason, and Nick’s group I really like how they focused their articles on drugs and alcohol. Just like eating habits, these are ongoing factors happening to us now. I was actually shocked by some of the statistics for alcohol and drug use. A few statistics that stuck out to me were a young person dies from an alcohol-related crash once everything three minutes on average, 93 percent of students in Greek like have reported using alcohol in the last year, and 82 percent of students under 21 have reported using alcohol in the last year. All the articles were good and I look forward to learning more in class.
