The Power of Articles

Two articles really stuck out for me. The first one is How To Become A Deep Thinker In College. Before reading this I had no idea what answers I would be getting. I thought I would be hearing things like “try thinking outside the box” or something along those lines but it was actually different. There are three steps to take in order to become a deep thinker. Step 1:  Choose courses that seem interesting to you. Step 2: Calculate the number of hours you spend doing work for the classes. Step 3: Double the hours and save aside free time. Very simple steps. The only part that got me a little nervous was doubling the hours. This is new to us. Us students could pass high school with minimal studying. This is a new experience for some of us. I can take this article to mind in Inquiry because of critical and intellectual thinking. The second article was Off-Campus Life. One part of the article that made me think was how it said to read a newspaper everyday. In our society, we rely on television and Internet for our resources. Yes, people still read newspapers all the time, but college students don’t read them like adults do. The article said how the newspaper will be your guide to the real world and also teach you how to write. Just like in English, the first paragraph tells the main point and the last paragraph concludes the article. Another aspect the article said was to get to know your teachers outside of class and ask them questions. The same with janitors, CC’s, and housekeepers. This ties in with our campus safari. It is about not just going to class and learning, but going beyond that. We need to know what goes on outside of school and communicate with teachers and peers.
